Hiking & Biking

hikiersASCI offers guided hikes in the 550 acre protected Fork Run Recreation Area as well as around the mountain top (and through the whitewater course). ASCI will guide groups of all ages, and will fit the hike/ walk accordingly (some trails cross onto paved paths -- for some, that is where hiking turns to walking). ASCI guides will bring first aid supplies, water and radio. Here are our basic offerings:

- Mountaintop Tour (1 hr., 6 per. minimum)

- Fitness Hike to Fork Run and Back w/ snack (2 hrs., 4 per. minimum)

- Mountaintop to Boulders w/ Lunch & Shuttle (1/2 day, 4 per. minimum)

For guided hikes to other locations around the county, call the experienced guides at All Earth Eco Tours.

The Fork Run Recreation Area features approximately 3.5 miles of trails, including a 1 mile single track loop and almost 2.5 miles of old gravel road that will someday connect another 5-6 miles of trails throughout the park.

Mountain bikes can be rented at WISP resort or High Mountain Sports. ASCI will be working with the Adventure Sports Institute in the Summer of 2010 to offer guided mountain biking and instruction. Stay tuned.

A
great diversity of wildlife call Fork Run their home, including black bear, white-tailed deer, Eastern wild turkey, coyote, ground hog, fox, fisher, rattlesnake, red-tailed hawk and numerous other residential and migratory species. Fauna is representative of the Alleghany Mountains, ranging from Princess Pine to spagnum moss to all the various hardwoods of the mid-Atlantic Eastern forests. Fork Run is protected through the Maryland Environment Trust with a permanent conservation easement that allows only certain, non-motorized activities and limited infrastructure development.
