ASCI 2010 Events

The Adventure Sports Center International sits at the top of Wisp Mountain, and is an amazing venue for competitions and festivals. For 2010, we will be hosting two national championships and two whitewater-oriented festivals. We are also working with Wisp and Garrett Trails for the first ever "Race up the Face" trail run on May 17th (see below).
The ASCI whitewater course was built to Olympic specs for both competition and viewing. Originally part of the 2012 Washington/Baltimore Olympic bid, ASCI's recirculating course sports an Olympic caliber whitewater section at the top of the course, and features a grass slope amphitheater that affords great whitewater views for hundreds of spectators. Convenient to ammenities and our Mountaintop Shop, watching and attending events at ASCI is both exciting and convenient. Check out the listing below and hopefully we will see you on the mountaintop this summer -- competing on the whitewater or cheering on the paddlers!
2010 "Race Up the Face" - World's Hardest 400 meter run/walk (May 17)
Garrett Trails, a local trail development and advocacyorganization, will be hosting this crazy race just before its Annual "Taste of Garrett" Fundraiser. Held on Wisp's most imposing slope -- the 'Face' -- an eastern style black diamond whopper, ASCI will be organizing the race and showcasing its own field of entrants. See your favorite raft guides huff their way up the mountain (and then thank their lucky stars that most of the time they get to let gravity work for them). 2010 Inaugural "All-American Whitewater Festival" (May 28-31)
ASCI's 2010 Events start off with an all-weekend whitewater festival in celebration of American veterans. Team River Runner, the national kayak program for injured war veterans, will have their second annual Rendezvous at ASCI, and will put on some whitewater demonstrations alongside a crew of professional extreme and freestyle kayakers during the day. Click here for the schedule. Friday night is community rafting for $25 starting after 4pm (through the sunset) and a pig-roast "Memorial Feast" to celebrate the start of Memorial Day weekend. Saturday is the official 'Festival Day,' with a kick-off 'Whitewater Parade and Figurehead Contest." Build a figurehead that can attach or sit in the front of a raft, and it will ride down the course for the Saturday parade starting at 11am. Prizes to the most creative and patriotic figureheads. The rest of Saturday will be discounted access for kayakers, whitewater demos (including ASCI's exclusive in 'gonzo' whitewater action, 'mattress surfing'), and the inaugural Veterans' Race, a mass-start kayak and raft race for only $10 an entrant.
2010 Whitewater Slalom Junior National Championships (June 26-27)
Top Junior athletes from around the country vie for National Champion. A weekend of top-notch racing and a chance to see America's next generation of Olympians. Registration and spectator information pending!
2010 Open Canoe Slalom Nationals and North American Championships (August 6-8)
Amazing race for U.S. and North American Champion in the traditional 'open' canoe. Paddlers race through gates down the rapids, and try to avoid rocks, getting swamped by the waves, or simply flipping in the tricky whitewater. Click here for event poster. Event details, registration forms and logistics at http://ocs.whitewater-slalom.us/oc-2010n.htm.
2010 Great Pumpkin Festival and Hooligan Race (October 10)
Fourth Annual Great Pumpkin Festival and Hooligan Race is a fundraiser for the Dove Center, and the grand finale event for the whitewater season. A great afternoon of fun, including the now legendary Hooligan Race (bring your own boat, dress in costume, and try to beat the other teams, some who may only be dressed in tin foil and styro-foam). Core event is the actual "Great Pumpkin Race," where participants buy pumpkins which are then set loose on the whitewater and race to the bottom (or, go wherever the current takes them). Top ten finishes win prizes.
